Smart Cameras in industrial image processing Thanks to their built-in intelligence, Smart Cameras can replace fully-fledged PC systems in a wide range of industrial applications. Equipped with high-performance processors, they are suitable for use as stand-alone image processing systems in demanding applications, such as measuring tasks and quality checks. Moreover, the compact devices offer new integration possibilities for machine and plant designers, thereby reducing costs – switching cabinets, for example, are no longer needed. What is a Smart Camera? A compact, robust housing incorporates all image processing components, including a high-quality CCD sensor, a powerful processor, a frame grabber, a serial and/or Ethernet interface and a high-speed trigger input as well as PLC I/Os. Additional options, e.g. an SVGA video output or SD memory cards, enhance the functionality of the intelligent cameras. The devices are suited for a greater range of tasks in industrial applications than widely assumed. They execute all image processing routines, rendering conventional PC stations unnecessary. Software All Smart Camera functions are controlled by the Linux-like real time operating system VCRT. All camera functions can be invoked via shell commands, which are also used to manipulate files, start programs or retrieve TCP/IP statistics. The file system is power failure safe. In order to shut down, it is sufficient to switch off the power supply. The Smart Cameras can be freely programmed in C and C++. Programming Smart Camera applications are programmed in an integrated development environment on a PC. The finished program is transferred to the camera via FTP and can be tested there. A comprehensive image processing library, VCLIB, facilitates programming. Vision Components also regularly offers introductory seminars on programming and image processing basics.
